Green Infrastructure & Stormwater Management
Swales & Vegetated Drainage Systems
Engineered solutions supporting surface runoff conveyance, infiltration and integrated stormwater management within landscaped and urban environments
Swales are shallow, vegetated or landscaped channels designed to collect and convey surface runoff as part of an integrated stormwater management strategy. Depending on their configuration, they can also support infiltration, flow attenuation and the removal of certain stormwater pollutants through vegetation and engineered soil media.
The hydraulic performance of a swale depends on its geometry, longitudinal gradient, vegetation, soil permeability and the characteristics of the contributing catchment. Where site conditions require additional drainage or infiltration capacity, subsurface drainage and modular stormwater systems can be incorporated into the design to complement surface water management.
These systems can be integrated into urban streetscapes, road corridors, car parks and landscaped open spaces, supporting the development of functional and sustainable stormwater infrastructure.

System Principles
Vegetated swales manage stormwater through a combination of surface runoff collection, controlled conveyance, infiltration and, where required, subsurface drainage. Their performance depends on the interaction between channel geometry, vegetation, soil characteristics and the supporting drainage infrastructure.
Key Design Parameters
The design of vegetated swales requires consideration of catchment characteristics, hydraulic performance, surface gradients, soil conditions and vegetation. Where subsurface drainage or infiltration systems are incorporated, their configuration must also account for water conveyance, discharge requirements and long-term maintenance. These parameters influence the integration and performance of swales within urban and landscaped stormwater infrastructure.
